How a Forgotten Suitcase Led Me to Paradise: Palomino, Colombia

Travel mishaps are a rite of passage for adventurers, but let me tell you, they can also lead to unexpected magic. Meet Palomino, Colombia—a boho beach town with dreamy surfer vibes, where the jungle hugs the ocean, a river meanders toward the sea, and even the desert gets in on the action. It’s a tiny slice of heaven, the kind of place you might see in a postcard and think, “Does this actually exist?” Well, I’m here to tell you it does—and I found it thanks to one hilariously ridiculous mistake.

The Jungle Resort, a Flight, and a Missing Suitcase

Let’s set the scene: I was wrapping up a blissful stay at the lovely eco-resort, Yay Sustainable tucked away in the lush jungle between Tayrona National Park and the starting point of the Lost City Trek on a serene river at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park, just a short distance from Colombia’s stunning Caribbean beaches. Think tranquility, birds chirping, and the kind of relaxation that makes you wonder if you’ve finally unlocked the secret to inner peace. My plan was to catch a flight from the nearest airport to Bogotá, continuing my Colombian adventure.

My driver—a cheerful, chatty fellow—arrived bright and early to whisk me to the airport. He loaded up the car (or so I thought), and we set off on the hour-and-a-half journey. As we chatted about the Colombian jungle, river, desert, coffee and the best empanadas in town, I didn’t have a care in the world.

Fast forward to our arrival at the airport. I stepped out of the car, stretched, and waited for the driver to pop the trunk. Except he didn’t. Instead, he just stood there with a confused look that screamed, “Why are you staring at me? Where’s my tip?”

It hit me. My suitcase—the one containing my clothes, essentials, and, let’s be honest, my entire sense of travel security—was not in the trunk. It was back at the Yay, probably enjoying a better morning than I was.

The Moment of Truth

At this point, I had two options. Option one: freak out, yell, and blame everyone in sight. Option two: laugh at the absurdity of the situation, accept my fate, and roll with it. I went with option two, mostly because what else could I do? The flight wasn’t going to wait for me to retrieve my luggage, and I wasn’t about to let a momentary setback ruin my day.

We turned the car around, and my driver, bless him, tried his best to cheer me up. We stopped for lunch on the way back—because let’s face it, nothing eases travel woes like food. Over a plate of pretty terrible mall food, I started to think: maybe this was a sign. Maybe the universe was nudging me toward something unexpected.

Enter Palomino

Back at Yay, I had some time to regroup. While scrolling through Google, I stumbled upon a mention of Palomino, a beach town not far from where I was. It sounded intriguing: tiny, laid-back, and brimming with charm on the Carribean Sea. Something about it called to me, so I decided to pivot. Why not trade the big city buzz of Bogotá for a little coastal escape?

The next morning, I hopped in my driver's car bound for Palomino, my suitcase safely in tow this time.

Falling for Palomino

Palomino wasn’t just a detour—it was a revelation. The town is small, unassuming, and refreshingly unpolished, with dirt roads that lead you straight to the ocean. The vibe is pure boho surfer, but it’s also a haven for yogis, artists, and anyone looking to unplug from the chaos of life.

I checked into a rustic beachside cabana and spent my days lounging in a hammock, sipping fresh coconut water, and walking barefoot along the shore. The evenings were even better: bonfires on the beach, live music drifting through the air, and sunsets so stunning they made my heart ache.

But Palomino isn’t just about the beach. The Sierra Nevada mountains loom in the background, offering lush jungle hikes and hidden waterfalls. The Palomino River winds its way through town, perfect for tubing adventures that end where the river meets the sea. And the people? Warm, welcoming, and full of stories that make you feel instantly at home.

I stayed for nearly two weeks, completely enchanted by the rhythm of life in Palomino. It was the kind of place that gets under your skin in the best way, leaving you plotting your return before you’ve even left.

Lessons Learned

If my luggage had made it into the trunk that morning, I would’ve been on my flight to Bogotá, following the itinerary I had meticulously planned. But instead, I found myself in Palomino, discovering one of my favorite places on earth.

Here’s the thing about travel: the best moments often come from the unexpected. A missed flight, a forgotten suitcase, or a sudden change of plans can feel like disasters in the moment, but they have a way of leading you to magic.

And let’s not forget the practical lesson here: always double-check that your luggage is in the car before you leave. Seriously.

Why Palomino Should Be on Your Radar

If you’re looking for a destination that’s equal parts serene and soulful, Palomino should be at the top of your list. It’s the perfect place to unwind, reconnect with nature, and rediscover the joy of slowing down.

Here are a few must-do experiences:

  • Beach Bliss: Spend hours strolling the soft sandy shores, soaking up the golden sun, and letting the rhythmic crash of waves melt your stress away.

  • River Tubing: Embrace the laid-back vibe by floating lazily down the Palomino River, surrounded by lush jungle and the soothing sounds of nature.

  • Jungle Adventures: Venture into the Sierra Nevada mountains for breathtaking hikes, secret waterfalls, and the chance to immerse yourself in Colombia’s unparalleled biodiversity.

  • Local Flavors: Treat your taste buds to fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and crispy arepas at cozy local eateries. Don’t miss the town’s healthy juice bars, like Cafe Holss, serving up vibrant blends of exotic fruits, or indulge in creative dishes that celebrate the region’s bounty.

  • Alternative Wellness: Dive into Palomino’s wellness scene with alternative plant medicine therapies and holistic treatments. From cacao and psilocybin ceremonies and guided meditations, to dance and human design readings, you’ll find unique ways to rejuvenate mind and body.

  • Art and Music: Experience the town’s creative spirit with its local art scene and beachside bars featuring live music. Let the soothing rhythms and colorful artwork deepen your connection to Palomino’s bohemian charm.

Palomino isn’t just a destination; it’s a retreat for the soul. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, savoring local delicacies, or exploring the jungle, every moment feels like an invitation to slow down, breathe, and savor the magic of the present.

The Takeaway

Travel isn’t just about the destinations you plan—it’s about the surprises you don’t see coming. My mishap with the forgotten suitcase could’ve been a nightmare, but instead, it led me to a place that now holds a piece of my heart.

Palomino is proof that sometimes, the best adventures aren’t planned. So here’s my advice: double-check your luggage, sure—but more importantly, stay open to the unexpected. You never know where it might lead you.
